The interactive GOODS field viewer

The interactive GOODS field viewer is a small Java applet providing zooming, panning and object selection capabilities. The viewer is displayed within the web browser window and shows the GOODS field, a color map for redshift from 0.1 to 1.5, a panel with menu buttons and information, and at the bottom of the viewer, the current RA/DEC values to which the mouse is pointing and the corresponding X/Y position in pixels within the image. The 2095x1318 JPEG image used in the viewer is a reduced version from the original 8380x5270 FITS file.

Menu Buttons

  • Float
Pressing the Float button causes the applet to be displayed in a new window, which can be resized independently from the browser window. Where the applet was located, a background image is now shown. A new Dock button replaces the Float button.
  • Dock
The Dock button causes the applet to be re-inserted into the browser window. After this operation, the Float button replaces the Dock button.
  • Redraw
The Redraw button refreshes the image display.
  • Reset
The Reset button displays the image in the original position and with no zoom.
  • Zoom out/Zoom in
The Zoom out button decreases the display magnification, while the Zoom in button increases the display magnification.

Display options

  • Background only
In this mode, only the GOODS field image is displayed.
  • Obj w/ redshift
In this mode, objects with redshift greater than 0 are marked with a small circle. The color of the circle changes from blue to red corresponding to the redshift. Green circles mark objects with ZQ (quality) = -1.
  • All objects
In this mode, objects with and without redshift are displayed. Objects with ZQ=INDEF are considered to have no redshift.

Navigation

  • Panning
Pressing and holding the left mouse button while moving the mouse causes the image to scroll following the movements of the mouse. When a limit of the image is reached, scrolling will stop.
  • Zooming
Pressing and holding the right mouse button while moving the mouse displays a rubber band that marks the area to which the image will be zoomed in.
  • Click on an object
Pointing the mouse to an object causes the Id, RA, DEC, Z and ZQ of that object to be displayed on the side panel. When the left mouse button is pressed on the object, then a new browser window will retrieve and display detailed information about that object, including close-up ACS and DEIMOS images, as well as the 1d and 2d spectrum.
